January 6 - Lord Curzon became Viceroy of India.
February 15 - Guru Mani Madhava Chakyar was born. He was a master performance artist and Sanskrit scholar. He is regarded as the greatest Chakyar Koothu and Koodiyattam (ancient Sanskrit drama theatre tradition) artist of modern times. He received Padma Sri Award, Sangeet Natak Akademy Award and Sangeet Natak Akademy Fellowship.
July 19 - Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay (pen name Banaphul) was born at Manihari. He is a famous Bengali author, playwright and poet. He is most noted for his short vignettes, often just half page long.
October 10 - Acharya Baldev Upadhyaya was born. He was a renowned Hindi, Sanskrit scholar, literary historian, essayist and critic. He wrote numerous books, collections of essays and a historical outline of Sanskrit literature. He was honoured with Padma Bushan Award.
Sir Romesh Chandra Mitra died. He was a judge. He was the son of the great reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
