September 12 - At the The Battle of Saragarhi, Twenty-one Sikhs of the 36th Sikh of the Sikh Regiment of British India defended an army post against 10,000 Afghan and Orakzai tribesmen. The battle occured in the North-West Frontier Province Afghanistan, now a part of Pakistan.
January 23 - Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack, Orissa. He was one of the most prominent freedom fighters. He organised the Indian National Army (INA).
April 19 - Peter de Noronha (Chevalier Peter Bertram Cypriano Castellino de Noronha) was born. He was a businessman, philanthropist and civil servant from Kanpur. He was knighted by Pope Paul VI in 1965 for his work for the Christian community.
June 11 - Ram Prasad Bismil was born. He was a freedom fighter who participated in Mainpuri Conspiracy and the Kakori conspiracy against British Empire. He was a patriotic poet and wrote in Hindi and Urdu using the pen names Ram, Agyat and Bismil.
March 10 - Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was died. She worked for the victims of plague and she herself was struck by the disease and eventually died from it. She was the wife of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. She was a social reformer and worked for improving women's rights in India during the British Rule.
May 23 - Pusapati Ananda Gajapati Raju died. He was a Rajah of the Vizianagaram kingdom in Andhra Pradesh. He was granted the personal title of Maharajah. He was a Member of the Madras Legislative Council.
