Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar was born. He was a Carnatic music singer known by his village name Chembai, or simply as Bhagavatar. Some of his famous disciples include Yesudas, T. V. Gopalakrishnan, V.V.Subramaniam, P.Leela, among others.
February 29 - Morarji Ranchhodji Desai was born. He was a freedom fighter and the fourth Prime Minister of India. He was the first Prime Minister to head the first non-Congress Government.
May 3 - V. K. Krishna Menon (Vengalil Krishnan Krishna Menon) was born. He was a nationalist, diplomat and statesman. He was the member of Lokh Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He was Indian Ambassador to the United Nations and Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
August 28 - Raghupati Sahay (pen name Firaq Gorakhpuri) was born. He was a writer, critic, and Urdu poet. He received Padma Bhushan Award, Jnanpith Award and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
September 1 - Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born. He was a Gaudiya Vaishnava teacher and the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON).
October 27 - Kshetresa Chandra Chattopadhyaya was born. He was a scholar of Sanskrit, Veda, grammar, Pali, Prakrit and philology. He was the editor of book series Sarasvati Bhavana Granthamala and famous Sanskrit Journal Sarasvati Susama.
