Mayo College was founded by the British Raj in Ajmer to educate the children of India's royalty.

Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College was founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in Aligarh. Later this college became Aligarh Muslim University.

Famous Births

May 12 - Krishna Chandra Bhattacharya was born. He was a philosopher at the University of Calcutta who studied one of the central questions of Hindu philosophy, which is how mind, life or consciousness creates an apparently material universe.

October 31 - Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was born. He was a barrister and statesman, leader of the Indian National Congress and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India. He held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister of India and Minister of Home Affairs.

December 22 - Nanda Kishore Bal was born at Kusupur village, Cuttack district, Orissa. He was a poet of the era of initial modernity in Oriya poetry. He is popularly known as "Palli Kabi" (the poet of rural life).
