November 11 - Treaty of Sinchula was signed in which Bhutan ceded the areas east of the Teesta River to the British East India Company.

Hafeez Jaunpuri (Haafiz Muhammed Ali) was born in Jaunpur. He was a poet.

March 31 - Anandi Gopal Joshi A (Anandibai Joshi) was born in Pune. She was one of the two first Indian women to obtain a medical degree through training in Western medicine.

November 2 - Panuganti Lakshmi Narasimha Rao was born at SeethaNagaram, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. He is one of the famous modern Telugu writers. He was one of the three famous writers of those days - Chilakamarthy Lakshmi Narasimham, Koochi Narasimham and Panuganti Lakshmi Narasimham - popularly known as Simha Trayam.

November 2 - Paul Olaf Bodding was born. He was a Norwegian missionary, linguist and folklorist. He served in India for 44 years and operated mainly from the town Dumka in the Santhal Parganas-district. Bodding created the first alphabet and wrote the first grammar for the Santali-speaking native people in eastern India. In 1914 he also completed the translation of the Bible into the Santali language.
