Dharam Singh Deol

Dharmendra (Dharam Singh Deol) is an Legendry Bollywood Superstar. He was born 8th December in the year 1935 to a Punjab Family in Punjab, India. His Father Kewal Krishen Deol, a School headmaster and his Mother Satwant Kaur Deol. Dharmendra spent his childhood at his native place Sahnewal in Ludhiana.

He started his career with Romantic Hero fame and later from 1974 onwards as an action hero. Darmenda starred in a large number of hit films in Bollywood and is considered as Living Legend. The "HE-MAN" as he is often called as, has given blockbusters consistently from 1962 till 1995 as lead hero alone. He starred with several big leading Actress at the beginning of his career. With Nutan in Soorat aur Seerat-1962 and Bandini-1963, Mala Sinha in Anpadh-1962 and Pooja Ke Phool-1964, Saira Banu in Shaadi-1962 and Aayi Milan Ki Bela-1964 and one of the most influential persons with whom he was associated, Meena Kumari in Main Bhi Ladki Hoon-1964, Kaajal-1965, Poornima-1965 and Phool Aur Paththar-1966 etc. Dharmendra formed a very successful pairing with actresses like Meena Kumari, Saira Banu, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Asha Parekh, Parveen Babi, Zeenat Aman and Hema Malini. He has delivered lot of hits with Hema Malini which includes Raja Jani, Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sharafat, Tum Haseen Main Jawaan, Jugnu, Dost, Charas, Maa, Chacha Bhatija, Azaad, Teesri Aankh, Sholay and Burning Train.

Dharmendra has been married twice. In 1954, when Dharmendra was just 19 years old, he married Prakask Kaur. He has four children with her, two sons, actors, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol and two daughters, Vijeeta and Ajeeta. On the sets of SHOLAY (1975), Dharmendra fell in love with Hema Malini, his co-star in many films. 1980 he converted to Islam to marry actress Hema Malini as his first wife refused to grant him divorce. His legal name after changing religion is Delawar Khan. On 2nd May 1980, Dharmendra got married to Hema Malini. Dharmendra has two daughters from Hema Malini, Esha Deol, who is an actress and Ahana Deol. Dharmendra was also romantically involved with actress Meena Kumari, his co-star in PHOOL AUR PATTHAR (1966).

In 2007 he made a comeback in films Life in a Metro and Apne were both successful at the box office. In the latter, he appears with both his sons, Sunny and Bobby for the first time. His other release was Johnny Gaddaar, where he played a villainous role, Yamla Pagla Deewana co-starring his sons Sunny and Bobby .

Dharmendra has also been active in politics. He was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represents the Bikaner constituency of Rajasthan and was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) political party.

Dharmendra was awared the most prestigious, India’s Third Highest Civilian Honour, PADMA BHUSHAN. He got many film fare award for his memorable acting in many movies. In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema and also another Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 IIFA Awards.
