Markapuram is famous for slates and slate pencils industry. It is the biggest slate industry in Asia.
Markapuram is famous for Sri Lakshmi Chennakesava Swamy temple . built by the Vijayanagar rulers between 1405-1459 A.D. Apart from magnificently sculptured gopurams , the temple has a beautiful 40-pillered mandapam with carvings of Krishna , Anjaneya , Garuda , Lakshmi &Vigneshwara with their respective vahanas. In the Kalyana Mandapam there are 6 musical pillars that produce the 7 musical notes when tapped. It is also important place for Arya Vyasyas. The first temple of Kanyaka Parameshwari is situated here.
First communist MLA of Andhra Pradesh Poola Subbaiah is from this village. The first railway station built in Nallamala area is in Markapuram. Almost from every major city buses are available to Markapuram.
There are many educational institutions in Markapuram including engineering colleges and medical college. There is a government hospital. There is ITDA(Integrated Tribal Welfare Agency) is situtated in Markapuram.
