Kishanganj district is one of the districts of Bihar, and Kishanganj town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Kishanganj district is a part of Purnia division.

Kishanganj district is located in the north-eastern part of Bihar. It shares its borders with West-Bengal on one side and Nepal on the other. It is often described as the corridor between northeast and rest of the country. The population of district according to 2001 census is 12.94 lakhs witnessing tremendous growth rate of 30% in last decade with little development to support the bourgeoning population. About 90% of the population lives in rural areas. The sex-ratio is 940 females per thousand males.

HISTORY

During the period of Khagada Nawab, Mohammed Fakiruddin, one hindu saint arrived , he was tired and wanted to rest at this place, but when he heard that this place name is Alamganj ,the river name is Ramzan and the Jamindar name is Fakiruddin , he refused to enter at Alamganj. After that the Nawab decided and announced some portion from Kishanganj Gudri to Ramzan pool gandhi ghat as Krishna-Kunj . As time passed by the name gets converted to present KISHANGANJ

During Mughal period Kishanganj district was the part of Nepal and was known as Nepalgarh. Mughal Emperor Shah Alam appointed Mohammed Raza at Surajapur for administration. Md. Raza captured the fort of Nepalgarh and name gets converted to Alamganj and administration gets shifted to Khagara. The Historical "KHAGRA MELA" is held every year at Kharga, Kishanganj.

Kishanganj was the old and important Sub-Division of Purnea. After the long and hard struggle of Seventeen Years from people of Kishanganj including Social Workers, politicians, journalist, businessman’s, Farmers etc., the Kishanganj District came into existence on 14th January 1990.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Ruins of Churli Estate: Kishanganj bears with pride, its connection to the erstwhile Churli estate on the outskirts of Thakurganj block bordering Nepal. The Haveli, once the pride of the Churli estate, is now in a totally dilapidated condition, even as it reminds visitors of its proud bearing.

During the British period, this estate was owned by Kudan Lal Singh and extended up to Sonapur in West Bengal, Kharudah in Kishanganj and 100 km up to the Nepal border. Churli Estate had taken zamindari rights (landlordship rights) from Tagore estate for two mauzas, Besarpatti and Nijagacch. After independence Tagore estate and Churli estate together fought the court case against the abolition of zamindari but lost everything in the land ceiling Act. Today, the descendants of Kudan Lal Singh live in abject poverty in the vicinity of the Haveli.

HarGauri Temple: HarGauri Temple is located in Thakurganj block. It is believed that this temple is at least 100 years old. In the year 2000, it celebrated its Golden Jubilee Year. This temple was built by the Zamindar of Tagore Estate. Folklore says that the Zamindar found the statues of Mahadev and Parvati co- joined together in one stone. He took the statue to Benaras, but one night he dreamt that Lord Mahadeva instructed him to return the statue to the original place and build a temple there. The Zamindar got so scared that he returned back next day and also subsequently got the temple constructed. Every year on the occasion of Shiv Ratri people come from far off places to worship and to offer holy water to the Shivling here.

Bandarjoola: Bandarjoola is a village located in Benugarh area. During excavations beautiful statues of Lord Vishnu and Sun God were found. This clearly marks the historical relevance of this place. Bandarjoola patiently awaits the arrival of archeologists to unravel its mysteries
