Penugolanu is a place centrally located in Gampalagudem mandal and one of the most populated villages after Gampalagudem which is the mandal head quarters. May be centuries ago there was a big lake (kolanu in telugu), thus the village ia named after it. Now the village has
nearly 9000 population and has a high school and four elemenyary schools.
The high school was built by villagers in 1962 with Rupees 50,000 later handed over to Zilla parisad which is a district local body. This was the second high school in Gampalagudem mandal. The then president of the village Vankamamidi Krishnamurthy was the president of this high school comimitee and Vemavarapu Suryanarayana was the joint secretary. Once Kota venkaiah had donated Rs.10,000 for the school. The school also named after his son Markandeya. The school was inagurated by then Zilla Parishad chairman Y. Sivaramakrishna Prasad.
Prior to mandals system it was in erstwhile Tiruvur Taluq of Krishna district. In terms of land the village is a big revenue village, having 5000 acres. Prior to idependence it was a Zamindari village owned by Toleti Krishna Murthy a brahmin family. Later they had sold it to Velamas of Putrela whose name was Katikaneni Radhamadhavakrishna Rao. The village lies near to Madhira Railway station which was then in Nizam rule. During the razakar movement somany people from in around of Madhira taluq came to our village for saving their lives from Nizam razakars. The village once was a trade centre for so many villages of Nizam (Madhira Taluq)and Tiruvuru Taluq (Krishna District), but now it is totally out.
