Ikshvaku was the first king of the Ikshvaku dynasty and founder of the Sun Dynasty (Suryavamsh). He is the son of Vivasvant Manu who is the son of Vivasvant (Surya, the Sun god). Ikshvaku reigned over Kosala, the present day Oudh in the state of Uttar Pradesh along the banks of the river Sarayu with Ayodhya as its capital. There are many illustrious Kings in the Ikshvaku Dynasty. Bhaghiratha, who brought the river Ganga to earth from heaven. Harischandra, who accepted selling his wife and son, but did not tell a lie. Shibi, who cut his limbs to feed a hawk so that he could save the life of a dove who had sought refuge in him. Ram, who was the seventh incarnation of Vishnu.
The last important king of Ayodhya was Brihdbal, who was killed by Abhimanyu in the Kurukshetra war. The last ruling king of the dynasty at Ayodhya was Sumitra in the 4th century BC, who, after being forced out of Ayodhya by emperor Mahapadma Nanda of Magadha's Nanda Dynasty, continued the royal line at Rohtas.
